Coincidence or Godincidence?
Based on the Book by Steve Rose
Film Adaptation by Cheryl McKay
Synopsis
Emmy Strong and partner Drew Logan set out to cover and debunk a new phenomenon called “Godincidences”, life-changing stories suggesting divine intervention, but on the journey they become believers spreading hope to the world.
Genre / Tone:
X-Files meets Touched by An Angel
The story is anchored to investigator Emmy (the skeptic) and Drew (the optimist), who investigate “Godincidences” while allowing a through line to follow their personal lives.
The couple will dive into four or five stories as part of their investigative work, along with a few of their own stories included while often asking this question to each other and others, “Was that a coincidence—or a Godincidence?”
Movie / Backdoor Pilot Overview:
Emerson “Emmy” Strong, 30, is known as a human lie detector and the best hoax buster around. She used to be the police officer best at interrogating criminals and getting the truth out of them. After her partner was killed, she stepped away from law enforcement.
Now, she uses her investigative skills reporting for a video newsmagazine digging up truths. When Emmy is dispatched to cover a new phenomenon called “Godincidences,” she’s certain she will only find hoaxes.
First, she struggles with the question: does she want to be the one to remove hope from these people through her quest for the truth? Then her skeptical worldview is challenged as she investigates these alleged God stories, only to find that often there is little evidence to debunk them.
Her investigative partner and camera operator is the handsome, “just-a-friend” Drew Logan, also 30s. He’s an honorably discharged veteran—the optimist to counterbalance her skepticism. She knows he had a harrowing experience overseas, but she has no idea what his source of hope is now, as he is keeping his own “Godincidence” a secret—that event that saved his life, until the time is right to share with her why he feels these happenings are not so hard to believe.
Drew and Emmy are sent out to cover a variety of these incidences. She doesn’t always know much about the people she’s going to see before she tracks them down, so it’s often a mystery she has to uncover along the way.
When people share their stories, it’s like Emmy gets a peek into the past in a way that makes those stories feel real time to her (using flashbacks of those who share their stories). All the while, God seems so be giving her “Godincidences” of her own to help her deal with the loss of her former partner—an event that originally secured her disbelief in God.
It happens in a way that even the strongest skeptic has a hard time dismissing, all while growing closer to Drew, who’s supportive, sharing these miraculous stories. Ultimately, the world is hungry for good news. Emmy’s project is well-received by an audience in great need of more hope.
